Quick facts

The water

Mainly simple springs, with weak salt (chloride) and gypsum (sulphate) springs.

History

Several legends, including ones about the ascetic En no Gyoja, the priest Gyoki and a tanuki, explain its discovery. It appears in a Man'yoshu poem. Natsume Soseki wrote his last novel 'Meian' here, and Kunikida Doppo, Shimazaki Toson, Akutagawa and Tanizaki all visited.
