♨ Tamatsukuri Onsen

An ancient 'bath of the gods' near Izumo, famous as a beauty bath.

Quick facts

The water

A sulphate-chloride spring with balanced sulphate and metasilicic acid. It's prized for its moisturising feel and traditionally said to be good for the skin.

History

Said to have opened in the Nara era and to have been found by the god Sukunahikona, it appears in the 733 Izumo Fudoki as a bath of the gods. The town's name comes from the jewel (tama) makers who worked agate here, and legend says one of the Imperial Regalia was made here.
