♨ Ureshino Onsen

A tea-growing town famous for silky water and onsen yudofu (tofu simmered in spring water).

Quick facts

The water

A sodium hydrogen carbonate-chloride spring, often listed as one of 'Japan's three great beauty-skin baths'. It's traditionally said to leave skin smooth.

History

The 8th-century Hizen Fudoki describes a spring here that 'cures the illnesses of all people'. Legend says Empress Jingu exclaimed 'ureshi' (how happy!) here, though the name probably has other roots. It thrived as a post town on the Nagasaki Kaido in the Edo era.
